Overcoming Overwhelm: The Physiology of Exhaustion

Apr 23, 2021

Overwhelm is alive and real. I know from my own, very long and very uncomfortable experience! On the The Manifestor’s Guide Today episode called "Closing Open Cycles", we discuss the importance of creating space in our lives by closing the “tabs” we leave open, essentially any pending or lingering items, before we overwhelm our personal "central processing unit" or CPU. Just like computers, our brains can become overwhelmed with too many processes running at once. The episode is an extremely important listen if you’re looking to create more time and productivity in your life, but sometimes we already feel so exhausted that we don’t even know where to start, even with a solution right in front of us! A lot of this has to do with the physiology of overwhelm. Understanding exactly what’s happening inside of our body can introduce instant ease and calm as we make a transition from overwhelm into balance.

As the episode addresses, when your brain has over-processed for an extended period of time, it can cause physical symptoms. While we’ll get into some of those symptoms down below, understanding why and how is important to having compassion for yourself. You see, while our brains are like computers, they’re also much more complex and intelligent than computers. Instead of running on separate hardware and software, it’s all packaged together into what scientists call “wetware.” The easiest way to understand wetware is through The Law of Divine Oneness: everything is connected! We might like to think we can compartmentalize and partition our open tabs so we don’t stress, but it doesn’t work that way. Simply put, it’s all energy!

Stress Hormones

Because our wetware connects every open tab in our lives into one “battery” source, we only have a certain amount of energy per day. Thoughts, decisions, physical energy, mental energy, spiritual energy... it all comes from the same source. When our brain (CPU) is overwhelmed with too many continuous processes running in the background, the “I’ll get to it later” items, we start to put literal stress on our bodies through force. This is because we’re not in alignment with our purpose (which we discover through our Top 6 in The Master Manifestor System), creating the opposite of ease. Instead we begin flooding our system with stress hormones like Adrenaline, Cortisol, and Norepinephrine. These hormones are associated with weight gain and retention, elevated blood pressure, insulin resistance, brain fog, insomnia and anxiety. It’s important to be patient with ourselves and allow time and space for the happy hormones, like serotonin, to replenish is important in lowering levels of stress hormones and starving off depression and overwhelm.

Adrenal Fatigue

While adrenal fatigue isn’t a technical medical diagnosis, it is a lay term for a widely known and recognized collection of symptoms caused by exhaustion. Our adrenal glands produce hormones that are essential to our very lives. An imbalance or insufficiency of any of these important chemicals can cause symptoms like fatigue, body aches, lightheadedness, skin discoloration, and blood pressure abnormalities to name a few. Proponents of adrenal fatigue in the medical community name chronic stress as the main culprit for these symptoms. This is why it’s so important to be gentle with yourself as you’re closing tabs and creating healthy space in your new life! You are worth it.

Magnesium Deficiency

One of the biggest lightbulb moments in my own life was discovering that I was deficient in magnesium due to long-term stress. I had been in a state of severe anxiety and depression for over a year and was actively manifesting an answer. While many lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, made a huge difference in my recovery, taking a magnesium supplement as advised by a nutritionist was like turning on a light that had been shut off in my body for the past year. I decided to get tested and, lo and behold, I had a severe deficiency. Up to 75% of Americans are not getting enough Magnesium, and the absence of this essential nutrient causes muscle cramps, mental disorders, fatigue, blood pressure abnormalities and depression. Low magnesium levels are directly correlated to long term stress exposure. Talking to your doctor about your magnesium levels may be a good place to start!

Digestive Issues

One last symptom of overwhelm can be unexpected but all too common; gastrointestinal issues! "Stress can affect every part of the digestive system," says Kenneth Koch, MD, Professor of Medicine in Gastroenterology and Medical Director of the Digestive Health Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our gut is controlled by our central nervous system, and when we are stressed, it causes a myriad of unwelcome symptoms; indigestion, trouble swallowing, nausea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers, and acid reflux. This is yet another reason why stress management and a healthy lifestyle is so important in our manifestation adventure. We are an ecosystem; mind, body, and spirit.

Mind, Body & Spirit

While discussing these higher-level concepts, like “Closing Open Cycles,” on the “macro” level allow us to understand our own big picture and manifest accordingly, looking at our “micro” day-to-day is just as important to understand why we’ve gotten where we are, and how important it is to love ourselves into a healthier state of being. Regular exercise, healthy diet, regular meditation practice, daily mindfulness, and closing our open tabs are each essential to our manifestation success. Effectively saying “yes” to what we desire by saying “no” to people, circumstances, and situations that do not serve our greater purpose is how we begin to close these lingering tabs in our lives, creating space for the good things we desire, including healthy physiology.
